Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003) was one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated explorers and travel writers.
Thesiger’s collections from a lifetime of travel are scattered across collections including the Royal Geographical Society, the Natural History Museum, and the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Drawing on Thesiger’s extensive literary archive at Eton and other collections, this exhibition will reassess his legacy eight decades after his crossings of the Rub’ al Khali. From his time spent as a student at Eton to his expeditions across Arabia and the creation of Arabian Sands, the exhibition will explore Thesiger’s writing, photography and journeys through themes of adventure, cultural encounter and the changing landscapes and communities he came to know.
