Events
We hold at several special events for Friends every year. Recent events have included:
- A lecture on M.R. James by an Eton history master, accompanied by displays in College Library and the Provost’s Lodge
- A carousel of talks by Eton curators on topics relating to gardens and botany, with afternoon tea
- Mementos of Montem: Behind the Scenes – talks by conservators with a Q&A session
- Special view of the Henry VI exhibition, followed by a visit to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle for Evensong
It was a terrific evening … so interesting. It was also lovely to be able to catch up with a few old and new friends beforehand.

Support for Acquisitions and Conservation
Acquisitions and conservation projects made possible by the Friends in recent years include:
- Aquisition of a lost manuscript on teaching at Eton, written by a fellow of the College (c.1745)
- Conservation of rare 19th-century costumes used in the Eton Montem procession, and of Richard Livesay’s late 18th-century painting of the procession
- Acquisition of Victorian silver plaques depicting Eton scenes, given by Old Etonians to actor-manager Charles Kean in 1859 in celebration of his career
- Commission of new candlesticks for Eton College Chapel by a leading contemporary silversmith
- Conservation of Odoardo Fialetti’s vast view of Venice (1611)

@GaryLoveHistory @MaryIeboner @EtonCollLibrary We don’t have evidence that Eton College awarded the medals (and an award for regular attendance at a boarding school seems a bit odd). Maybe the company used the image of Eton as a well known school. The company produced many other medals, for good conduct, maths, reading, etc
@GaryLoveHistory @MaryIeboner @EtonCollLibrary ESA predominately made furniture, but also globes, inkwells, floor-standing abacus, lab equipment, stationery, books and medals. They sold their wares through trade catalogues.
