Val Young, Gallery Steward

Who are you and what do you do?

Hi, I’m Val Young and have worked over in Queen’s Schools aka Science schools as support staff for about 15 years. I also work in the exhibition spaces as a Gallery Steward.

What made you want to work in the Museums and Galleries at Eton College?

I have always had an interest in the arts coupled with the history I am surrounded by. When the post came up for Stewards for opening the Verey Gallery in January 2019, I jumped at the chance.

Do you have a favourite item and why?

They are all my favourite items. I enjoy an exhibition and when it is replaced, I see the merits in the new one. The last one was The Eton Choirbook. I’d say that is in the running!

Val has written about the Eton Choirbook for the Collections Spotlight: https://etoncollegecollections.wordpress.com/2020/05/12/the-eton-choirbook/

You can see the the full digital version here http://diamm.ac.uk/sources/202/#/

You can find out further details about the Eton Choirbook in the Eton Collections Catalogue: http://collections.etoncollege.com/B46854

The Eton Choirbook received UNESCO recognition, and was a feature in the Michaelmas 2018 edition of the Collections Journal: http://etonweb.etoncollege.org.uk/friends/Journal12/mobile/index.html#p=1

Back editions of the Collections Journal can be viewed on our website: https://www.etoncollege.com/FriendsJournals
