‘An Etonian Collector’ featured the work of significant artists and was the first time in living memory that many of these works were on public display. The exhibition included an eclectic mix of 28 watercolours, drawings and oil paintings by artists including J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851), J.R. Cozens (1752–1797), David Cox Snr (1783–1859) and Peter de Wint (1784–1849).
The collection was bequeathed to the College by Old Etonian Richard Amis, who attended the school from 1945 to 1950. Amis gave the works with the intention that they would be ‘kept together and well looked after, and perhaps spark an interest in some… as my [Eton] tutor and his watercolours did for me.’
This exhibition of fine art drawn from the Eton Collections first appeared in London for two weeks in September 2024 at Guy Peppiatt Fine Art, before moving to Eton. A version appears online.
