Boarding Houses
With the Burning Bush behind you and the Long Walk on your left, make your way along the pavement towards the turning for Keate’s Lane.
Seventy boy scholars still live in the oldest area of the college above Lower School and are therefore called ‘collegers’. The other boys or ‘oppidans’ live in the 24 other boys’ houses spread around the town. Each house has a house master and a dame, who looks after the 50 boys’ physical health and runs the domestic side of the house.
As you walk towards Keate’s Lane, you will pass two of these purpose-built houses on your right, Durnford House and Hawtrey House, built between 1843 and 1845 by Robert Hicks of Lambeth and designed by Windsor builder Mr Ingalton in a mock-Tudor style.
