This was first of two ad-hoc exhibitions showing the range and variety of the College Library and Archives. The aim of these exhibitions was to show a selection of objects and artworks used to support teaching. This selection included material relating to Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003), two former students at Eton College. It also displayed a fine selection of books relating to travel from the 16th to the t20th centuries. Among the more famous are the voyages of Captain Cook and some classics of polar exploration. China and Russia were also represented.
Sculptures by Moelwyn Merchant (1913-1997) were shown alongside two medieval manuscripts from the 13th and 15th centuries, a selection of fine bindings and 19th– and 20th-century theatrical memorabilia. Unusual items relating to Napoleon and Wellington were also displayed.
Curated by Michael Meredith, Curator of Modern Collections and Emma Day-Stirratt, Project Cataloguer, Eton College.
