In Memoriam: Great War Remembrance at Eton

The memorials established at Eton in response to the First World War are so numerous and widely distributed that they permeate the fabric of the college. They memorials continue to remind us of the service and sacrifice of 1,158 boys and Eton masters who died and the 5,661 who served.

In the centenary of the final year of the First World War, this exhibition united records and objects of remembrance from the college’s museums, archives and libraries, as well as from its chapels, boarding houses and school buildings to offer an exploration of one community’s memorialisation of the war. The exhibition conveyed the variety of memorials; collective and individual, visible and unbuilt, educational and aesthetic, telling the story of how Eton came to terms with its grief and pride, both during and after the Great War.

Curated by Rachel Bond, College Librarian and Eleanor Hoare, College Archivist, Eton College.
